Sad, bad news on the bird

This morning I came down to an ominous silence – the second chick had died during the night. I’m so sad as it seemed to be doing so well yesterday.

Another – can there be any left up there – chick came down the chimney late yesterday evening. In a panic it flew headfirst down the back of a radiator. It took a lot of slow and patient fiddling by my daughter, with smaller hands than me, to get it out safely. We kept it overnight,as it was dark by then, and as it was fine this morning let it go into the garden.

We could see that it was much bigger, sleeker and better developed than our chick. It just made us realise that no matter how hard we tried we couldn’t match its parents care.

The house is sadly quiet for the first time in days!
