Wintery birds by the Dart

I can tell it’s winter as I’ve seen the first pair of goosanders down on the Dart. A beautiful bird, but not very popular with fishermen as they eat the salmon fry. And they did seem to be doing a lot of diving under the water….hmm wonder what they were after.

The grey heron has taken up his fishing post just upstream of Holne Bridge and we’ve seen him there twice already this week.

In my garden I’ve started feeding the birds in earnest, but this year in expensive, supposedly squirrel proof feeders. I did relent and scatter some mealworms. By the time I’d got indoors three ravens had decided to come for breakfast.
